What to bring to your first table tennis club session
First visits go smoothly when you have the basics in the bag. Here is a checklist.
Gear
- Your paddle, if you have one. Otherwise ask whether the club has loaners.
- A few balls if you can. Most clubs have them, but you will want your own for practice.
- A towel. Playing is more physical than most people expect.
- Water.
Clothing
- Indoor court shoes with a clean, non-marking sole. Gym floors are slippery in street shoes.
- Athletic shorts or pants and a breathable shirt. Avoid a plain white shirt if the club uses white balls, since the ball is harder to see against it. Orange balls, which are also common, make this less of an issue.
Money
Check how the club takes payment before you arrive. Some clubs are card only, some take cash only, and some city programs use online pre-registration. We list payment notes where we know them. See our guide to day play and membership for the usual pricing.
Questions to ask the front desk
- Is open play running now, or is there a class or league?
- How do you decide who plays at which table?
- Is there a beginner night or a coach I can talk to?
Mindset
Most regulars are happy to hit with a newcomer. Be friendly, say what level you are, and ask to rotate in. Read our etiquette guide for the unwritten rules.
