Table tennis table, net, and ball: official sizes
If you want to practice at home, or you just want to know how big the table is, these are the official numbers.
The table
- Length: 2.74 m (9 ft)
- Width: 1.525 m (5 ft)
- Height: 76 cm (30 in) from the floor to the playing surface
The surface is dark, matt, and usually blue or green, with a 2 cm white line around the edge and a thinner center line used for doubles.
The net
The net stands 15.25 cm (6 in) above the playing surface and extends 15.25 cm past the side of the table.
The ball
Official balls are plastic, 40 mm or larger in diameter and about 2.7 g. They are white or orange. Three-star balls are the standard for serious play and tournaments.
Space around the table
Competitions use a large playing area. For home or recreational play, plan for at least a few feet behind each end and along the sides, since good players back away from the table when they loop. Cramped space limits your game more than a cheap table does.
Buying a table for home
- Thicker tops (at least 18 to 19 mm) bounce more reliably.
- Foldable tables save space, but check that the two halves stay level.
- Outdoor tables use weather-resistant material, but the bounce is usually less consistent.
