Table tennis ratings, leagues, and tournaments in the US
Casual play is great. When you want a challenge, leagues and tournaments give you someone close to your level to play.
USA Table Tennis (USATT)
USA Table Tennis is the national governing body. It sanctions tournaments and keeps player ratings. A rating is a number that goes up and down based on results against rated players. Entering a sanctioned event usually requires a USATT membership. Check the USATT site for current membership options and fees.
Club leagues
Many clubs run seasonal leagues, often with a small fee on top of a drop-in or membership. Leagues are easy to join and usually open to beginners. We note league fees on listings when we know them.
Tournaments
Tournaments are divided into events by rating, age, and sometimes gender, so you play others at your level. A typical day has round-robin groups followed by knockout brackets. Beginners can enter low-rated or "under" events.
Your first tournament
- Check the event listing for the venue, entry fee, and deadline.
- Confirm that your paddle is tournament legal (see paddle guide).
- Bring two paddles if you can, in case yours breaks.
- Know the basic rules.
- Arrive early. Waiting is common.
Not sure yet?
Watch a local tournament first. Entry is often free for spectators, and you will pick up the format quickly. Ask the clubs on our directory when their next one is.
