How to care for your table tennis paddle and make rubber last
Table tennis rubber is soft and tacky, and it is sensitive to dust, heat, and fingers. A few habits protect it.
Clean it
After playing, wipe the rubber gently with a slightly damp sponge or a cloth made for the job. Rubber-specific cleaner is cheap and works better than tap water on greasy marks. Wipe in one direction, not in circles, and let it air-dry. Never scrub hard.
Cover it
Dust kills grip. Apply a protective film if you use one, or at least keep the paddle in a case. Many players cover the rubber with a thin film made for the purpose.
Keep it away from heat and sun
A hot car is the worst place for a paddle. Heat dries out the rubber and can loosen the glue. Keep it in a bag at room temperature.
Do not touch the surface
Skin oils reduce grip. Hold the paddle by the handle and the edges of the blade only.
Protect the edges
Edge tape stops the rubber from lifting at the edge and protects the blade if the paddle hits the table. Replace it when it peels.
Know when it is done
If the surface looks shiny or no longer holds the ball, or the sponge feels flat, it is time to replace the rubber. Read the rubber guide to choose its replacement.
